RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
