Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
