US Justice Department Joins Lawsuit to Halt the State of California's Congressional Map

The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.

This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.

"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.

The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.

"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.

Legal Basis

The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.

"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.

Political Context

This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.

Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.

Wider Consequences

Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.

The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
